Check with a clinician when something changes

Sudden or patchy hair loss, new facial hair growth, skin changes and swelling can have medical causes, including thyroid, iron, hormone or circulation problems. If something changes quickly, or you're pregnant, nursing or taking medication, talk to a clinician before trying a new product.

Supplements

Statements about dietary supplements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Some ingredients, such as high-dose biotin, can affect blood test results: tell your doctor what you take.

Skin and hair products

Do a patch test before using a new product on your face or scalp, and stop if you notice irritation.

When to get help right away

Swelling in one leg with pain or redness, sudden swelling of the face or lips, or swelling with shortness of breath needs prompt medical attention. In an emergency, call 911.
